To Bunk or Not to Bunk

Posted on Monday, December 07, 2009 by admin in Uncategorized |

Is your kids’ room not big enough for more than one bed? Bunk beds are great space savers. They are very practical when you have kids sharing a room. But before you go out and buy a set, consider the room dimensions. The ceiling has to be high enough to leave enough space above the top bunk. You don’t want your child suddenly sitting up and hitting his head on the ceiling. If possible, get bunk beds that have safety bars or railings surrounding the top bunk. Check the posts to make sure they are sturdy enough. Nowadays there are bunk beds that are not just beds—some have shelves attached, reading lamps, and the like.

There are different opinions as to the proper age to put children in bunk beds. However, it is really up to the parents to determine that. You know your kids better than the child experts do. It’s your call to determine whether or not they are ready for bunk beds. The paramount consideration is, of course, your kids’ safety. With this in mind, the older child is usually the one assigned to the top bed.

Bunk beds are useful, even if you only have one child. Not only useful, bunk beds can be versatile. Your kid can use the bottom bed as a couch, with lots of throw pillows. This is great for watching television. Then he can just climb up to the upper bunk to sleep. The extra bed is great when your kid’s friends sleep over. Others use the top bunk for storage.
